Sponges form within these vigorous and easy-to-grow gourds. Their vines can reach up to 15 ft! Harvest them at 2" for a fun, cucumber-like snack! They also make great non-abrasive kitchen scrubs and bath sponges.
Instructions:
Direct sow 2/3 seeds per space once soil temps have reached 70ºF. Prefers rich, loose, well-drained soils. Water well, at least 1-2 times per week. Provide fertilizer based on soil test. To eat fresh, harvest when fruit is 2" long. For sponges, allow the fruit to stay on the vine until the skin turns brown, drying and shrivelling. Remove the fruit and gently rub the skin away. Shake out the seeds. The sponge can be placed in the sun to naturally bleach it to the desired color. Use and enjoy!.
