  1. Duct Tape for the Soul, February 2024

It was a warm, rainy, dismal morning in August 2017 when I was flying out of Philadelphia. I had just attended the funeral of my brother less than two weeks before, and my mood was a bit dark and gloomy, just like the weather. Soon after take off, we broke through the clouds; the heavens were beautiful, the sun was shining and the sky was crystal clear above the pure white fluffy clouds. I was reminded again that the sun is always shining even when it's raining in our lives. For he hath said, ”I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5b. God is always near us, and we don't need to face the storms of life alone. You may be facing terminal illness, depression, anxiety, death, or walking alongside folks who are making poor choices. With God’s help, we can take courage and remember that God's promise to Joshua is still true today. “Have not I...

  2. January 2024 Duct Tape for the Soul

Even though my wife and I did not grow up in the church, my wife was always a seeker. On the other hand, I was not spiritually minded at all. We found our different experiences spelled out side by side in the Bible in Matt 13: 44-46. She, the seeker of the pearl of great value, and I, just walked through a field and "stumbled upon" the hidden treasure of great value. In the story, both the seeker and the stumbler saw the amazing value of the treasure and sold all they had to buy it. I can understand how God calls the seeker, but I have always marveled at how He calls the doubter and the unspiritual to Himself. But once I understood that Jesus was the one who came to "seek and save that which was lost"...I realized that He is the one who places that stumbling treasure in our path. Our need for forgiveness is so great that God is not content to just let us go our way. That thing that you keep...

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:18

My wife and I were stranded in a remote town in Northern California after a vehicle accident over thirty years ago. We walked to a local family-run motel, which offered us a place to stay until we could figure out our next steps. We sought information about the area at a local business and received help from a kind lady in her upper sixties. We decided to go to the next major town, forty-five minutes away, and purchase another vehicle. Grateful for her assistance, we planned to take the first bus in the morning.

Several hours later, back at our motel, we heard a knock on our door and opened it to find our new friend, Mary Darcy, standing there. She had been thinking about our situation and said she felt better about taking us in her vehicle and ensuring we found a...

  4. Spiritual Freedom - November Duct Tape for the Soul

    November 2023

    Spiritual Freedom

John 8:36 reads, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye are free indeed.

I said it would never happen, but once Olly (the inside puppy) arrived in our home, everyone was smitten! Once he learned to climb out of the one pen, I purchased a taller one I knew he would never escape. I was glad that after several weeks of exhausted attempts, he finally gave up trying. When I packed the shorter pen for a family trip, my wife commented that the dog would easily jump out. I assured her he wouldn't even try because he had been convinced he couldn't. I was right! That is fine for a dog, but it is not for people. Most of us have past hurts and failures that have made us believe the lie that we can't grow past those experiences. Once we have exchanged our sins for the grace...

  5. Healing & Foregiveness - October Duct Tape for the Soul

    October 2023

    Healing & Forgiveness

I recently had an abrasion on my left elbow that I didn’t discover for a few days, leading to an infection and the need for antibiotics. I have no idea what happened or how long it was there. Occasionally, I bump and rub against things as I help customers or work around the house. Scrapes and cuts are bound to happen. Sometimes, we bump and brush one another, causing abrasions to our relationships. Proverbs 27:17 states (paraphrased) As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. But, when iron contacts flesh in a relationship and isn’t dealt with quickly, it can lead to an infected relationship. Mathew 18: 21- 22 (KJV) teaches: Then came Peter to him and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not...

  6. Humility - September Duct Tape for the Soul

    September 2023

    Humility

James 4:6 "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." How do we receive God’s grace, something we all need, through humility? Some other terms for humility are gentleness, meekness, modesty, of lower degree, and unselfishness. Humility is not passive, though. Living this out daily is a challenge because it goes against our nature. God promised He would give...

  7. Pride - August Duct Tape for the Soul

    August 2023

    Pride

James 4:6 "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."  As we study the Bible, it often refers to pride as something God will not tolerate. Proverbs 16:5 "Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD." Pride has many expressions; deep pleasure in one’s achievements, arrogance, envy, high-mindedness, boasting, or anything that...

  8. Seek Jesus - July Duct Tape for the Soul

    July 2023

Seek Jesus; he is a fountain of hope

This spring has been considerably dry for most of the region. We are now into summer with little moisture reserve, including a mild winter with very little snow. I and many others with great tenacity have been watering our gardens once to twice daily. The ground is super dry, and the plants are thirsty. When watering my garden, I had to think about A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness. Not only was the area in which he was very dry, but he was also experiencing a dry time in his life in loneliness and fearing his enemies. Psalm 63:1 "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;..." (KJV)

As our plants anticipate water daily to grow, we as humans need water...

  9. God is always with you - June Duct Tape for the Soul

    June 2023

    God is always with you

A few summers ago, my family and I went on a vacation. My daughter was pretty young and carefree at the time, so while we were hiking she accidentally stepped on a snake that was halfway in the path. Noticing the movement, I quickly grabbed her and got her out of harm's reach. In reality, I doubt I was the one fast enough to avoid a snake bite for her. I know that it was God who protected her.

I think we can all recall a time when a bad situation happened to us or someone we are close to. Maybe you didn’t literally step on a snake, but you may have walked into a bad situation. Without even realizing it, God may have reached for you and pulled you out of harm's way and back onto the right path. If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, He promises to never leave you or forsake...

  10. How do you find rest? - May Duct Tape for the Soul

    May 2023

    How do you find rest?

Do you find yourself searching for rest or trying to escape life’s burdens? In Matthew 11:28 - 30, Jesus tells us, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.“ Only Jesus can provide us true rest from our burdens, and we need to allow Him to take our burdens from us daily. Are you allowing enough margin in your schedule to rest in Jesus? It’s easy to fill our schedules with work, social media, fun activities, and entertainment and forget to spend time with the Lord. “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 KJV...

  11. Every day is a gift from God - April Duct Tape for the Soul

    April 2023

Every day is a gift from God

April brings a fresh spring feel to the air. It is a pleasant time of the year when the earth comes alive from the cold winter. Just a few months ago, we celebrated Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ. Easter completes the story of Jesus coming to earth and dying on the cross for you and me. Death often has a negative feeling associated with it. However, we can rejoice that over 2,000 years ago, Jesus died on the cross and rose victorious over death and hell to give us hope beyond the grave. Some of us have family and friends waiting for us to join them in Heaven. Let us all remember that each day is a gift from God and handle it with care. Heaven will be a gift from God and worth it for all those living for Him. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son...

  12. Who is Jesus to you? - March Duct Tape for the Soul

    March 2023

    Who is Jesus to you?

Depending on your life’s path you will answer this differently. To some, Jesus is the Great Judge looking to condemn wrong. Others may say he is the Great Forgiver and only wants to forgive. Still some may say he is full of grace and peace and only wants the best for you. Others do not know of whom I speak.

John 15:12-14 (KJV) says, “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Jesus wants to be our friend. You see, Jesus is all these things. What would a friend be if he did not correct us when we are wrong (Judge)? What would a friend be if he did not forgive us when we mess up (Forgiver)? What would...
